The Intensive Care Unit Internship Program
Brookhaven offers a solution for success in this comprehensive program designed specifically for the new registered nurse choosing a career in Intensive Care Nursing. This highly selective program combines various clinical rotations with specific ICU competencies and provides invaluable experience in preparation for a Critical Care Certification.
The ICU Internship Program is a 12-month program that offers clinical rotations throughout the medical center. Students will be assigned to a preceptor with oversight by a clinical instructor. The program provides classroom and hands-on experiences in a variety of training areas.
Successful completion of the program depends on passing all courses and submitting all relevant material on time. Upon successful completion, the new nurse intern will be guaranteed a full-time position in one of our intensive care units. The new nurse intern will fulfill a two year commitment to Brookhaven Hospital after completion of the program.

Throughout the program nurse interns will receive frequent evaluation from all learning partners.
Eligibility
In addition to the following requirements, the nurse intern must be able to fulfill a two year commitment to Brookhaven Hospital after completion of the program.
- Two or four year RN program graduate
- Passing score on NCLEX exam
- Less than six months of clinical experience

- An essay describing why you wish to participate in the program and why you are choosing ICU as a specialty
- A copy of your college transcript
- Two letters of reference from recent college professors (one should be a letter from the director of the program, if possible)
- A current resume
- A summary of a recent completed project, related to nursing
- Interviews at Brookhaven with an ICU nurse, clinical instructor, director of nursing education, and a human resources representative
- An application for employment or a transfer request (for current employees)
