Find Out How You Can Help
For your comfort and convenience, the hospital provides a variety of personal services.

Cellular Telephones
There is increasing evidence that cellular phones cause interference with the functioning of hospital equipment such as ventilators, monitors, pumps, incubators, dialysis machines, and smoke detectors. The phenomenon is believed to be caused by radio frequency interference generated by transmitters in the telephone which interfere with computer microprocessors vital to the operation of today's sophisticated medical devices. In light of this information, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center requires that cellular phones are turned off (not on standby mode) while in the hospital. To ensure the safety of our patients, routine cellular phone use is prohibited in the Medical Center.

Coffee Shop
The Coffee Shop is located off the hospital's Lobby. The shop offers a variety of food items at reasonable prices. Visitors wanting to purchase food for a patient must first obtain a pass from the nursing station on the patient's unit. The Coffee Shop. is open from 7:30am - 7:30 pm, Monday - Friday. On Saturday and Sunday the Coffee Shop is open from 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for a continental breakfast.

Educational and Support Services
As part of its health care services, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center conducts a variety of educational and support programs. The Medical Center also offers a number of clubs and programs for the general public. Some of these are intended to complement the hospital's inpatient education services by providing patients with follow-up instruction and information after they have been discharged. If you are discharged on a modified diet and have questions, you may call for counseling or a follow-up out-patient at the Department of Nutritional Services, 631-654-7776.

Flowers
Flowers are delivered to patients in their rooms by florist staff. The only exception is Maternal/Child Care. Nursing staff personnel will accept flower deliveries for these patients and deliver them to the rooms. Flowers are not permitted in the Intensive Care Units.
  Gift Shop
Adjacent to the Coffee Shop is the hospital's Gift Shop, offering a large selection of gift items, books, magazines, and toiletries. The shop is open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. If you would like a particular item from the Gift Shop brought to a patient's room, please call 631-654-7153.

Mail
All mail sent to patients is delivered to their rooms by hospital volunteers.

Patient Education Programs: Hospital Television Channel 3
Chapel Services are broadcast live on Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Patient Education Programs are available through hospital broadcasting on channel 3, which is available to all patients free of charge. These programs, covering a variety of health-related topics, are educational and informative in nature. Copies of program offerings are available from Admitting.

If you would like to rent a television, call extension 631-654-7738 between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Persons calling between those hours will receive service the same day.
