Brookhaven Hospital Hazmat Training
July 5, 2017
We at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital consistently train for the unexpected incidents that could occur at the Hospital. Last week our nursing staff attended a two day Hazmat training program to learn how to decontaminate a high volume of contaminated patients caused by hazardous materials.
The Hospital conducts hazardous materials training about two times a year. Brookhaven Hospital has two decontamination facilities one is a fixed room within our Emergency Department and the other is an inflatable Zumro tent. We have the ability to treat both ambulatory patients and non-ambulatory patients. This year the training even included treating a service animal!
The training session included all new staff from our Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units and nurse educators. Approximately 60 employees were trained in total covering all members from all shifts. The staff came from a variety of disciplines including; nursing, environmental, engineering, laboratory, pharmacy and even nutritional services all participating in the training and are now ready and able to suit up at any given moment.
