Respiratory Care

Respiratory care predominately treats patients with diseases that affect the heart and lungs, also known as cardiopulmonary disorders. Licensed by New York State and holding nationally recognized credentials, Brookhaven’s respiratory care practitioners work with patients of all ages and in all patient care units in the hospital.

Our respiratory care team provides a broad spectrum of respiratory care, diagnostic and therapeutic – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – to patients in four intensive care units, the emergency department, intermediate care units and general patient care units. They are members of the cardiac arrest team, trauma team, stroke team and the rapid response team.

Our staff works with the healthcare team of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and other staff members to provide a broad range of services including:

  • Airway management including intubation.
  • Mechanical ventilation.
  • Noninvasive ventilation.
  • Continuous positive airway pressure.
  • Bronchodilator therapy.
  • Medical gas delivery.
  • Arterial blood gas sampling.
  • Chest physiotherapy.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Educating patients and families with respiratory home care and to facilitate self-care.

The Respiratory Care staff at Brookhaven strives to provide the best possible care to every patient and improve their quality of life.
