Find Out How You Can Help
1. Does the MRI use x-rays?
No. MRI images are created through a combination of radio waves, a powerful electromagnet and an advanced computer system to coordinate and compile data.

2. What kind of pictures does MRI produce?
The images produced by the MRI machine are so clear they almost look like the diagrams from an anatomy book. MRI is an important diagnostic tool for a variety of body structures, including the brain, spine and other vital organs.

3. Is MRI safe?
MRI is a completely non-invasive, painless procedure and has been demonstrated to be safe. In fact, since MRI does not use x-rays, it is even safer than a routine chest or dental x-ray study.

4. How long does an MRI take?
It depends on the study but the unit at our medical center is the fastest in the region. What can take up to an hour on an older machine can be completed in just 20 minutes at our center.

5. Can I bring a friend if I need a MRI?
Yes. One person may accompany you in the magnet room.

6. When will my doctor get the results of the MRI?
The studies are processed, interpreted by a radiologist and communicated with your physician within 24 hours of the exam itself.

7. Are all MRI machines the same?
Definitely not. As with any high-technology system, major improvements are made with each new year. The stronger the MRI, the clearer the image will be for physicians to make an accurate diagnosis. In addition, a strong magnet will usually shorten your scan time.

8. When is the MRI unit available?
Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

9. How can I learn more about MRI?
For more information, call The MRI Center at Brookhaven at 631-654-7448.
