Who might benefit from Speech-Language Pathology Services?
Any person who is experiencing a communication and/or swallowing problem due to a disease or disorder, or a person who has had an injury that may produce a temporary or permanent communication and/or swallowing impairment will benefit from Speech-Language Pathology Services that are available for our patients during their hospitalization.

What is a communication disorder?
Communication is one of the most basic needs. It includes speaking, listening, writing, reading, and gesturing. It allows for understanding, learning, sharing information, and sharing feelings that are so important in our daily lives. A reduced ability to communicate can be enormously frustrating. At Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, we know that communication really is good medicine.

What is a swallowing disorder?
Swallowing is an important part of our daily lives. Swallowing transports water and food from our mouth to our stomach to provide hydration and nutrition. Eating is also a social event and is an important part our of our family and community life. If swallowing is impaired, there is a threat to our physical and social lives. Diseases that alter the nerves or muscles that are involved in swallowing produce swallowing difficulty, which is called dysphagia. At Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center we provide our patients with a highly skilled Speech-Language Pathologist who evaluates and treats dysphagia.
